AUGUSTUS: OKLAHOMA
How to make a theatre poster without actors but still showing the drama of the family, that was the question to solve. The art direction for this theatre play was not an easy one. Even the Utrechtse Spelen were still searching for their own stage design. The creative team for this project at IN10 consisted of Nicole Sandberg, Annelies Jansen and myself. After creating the art direction of the home interior we chose the wonderful photographer Lodewijk Duijvesteijn.
The story:
Due to family circumstances, the three Weston sisters return to their ancestral home in rural Oklahoma. As tensions run high – not at least thanks to the ruthless comments of their manipulative, pill-addicted mother- , it soon becomes clear that no childhood trauma will remain untouched. No secret is safe anymore and no one escapes the stranglehold of motherly love.
With August: Oklahoma the American author Tracy Letts wrote an evening family drama in which he combined soap opera and classical theatre in a stunning way. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, only the most important American playwriting awards..
